HOW TO MAKE CBD OIL
For those that don’t already know, CBD is short for cannabidiol. CBD is a naturally occurring chemical compound found in cannabis plants. The most common forms of cannabis sativa are marijuana and hemp. Cannabinoids are produced by these plants predominantly as a resin, and there are many different forms.
CBD, and other cannabinoids like THC, have shown potential in some scientific studies to help relieve symptoms from certain health conditions by interacting with the body’s endocannabinoid system.
For this reason, many companies are offering CBD oil for pain and as a health and wellness supplement.
In this article we’ll discuss a few simple ways you can make your own CBD oil at home without expensive equipment or a lot of know how. There are two main schools of thought on this. The first method we’ve listed is commonly known as the Oil Method, the other is known as the Alcohol Method. Below we’ll run through each of these methods in more detail.
The first step in making any CBD product should always be checking state and local laws to be sure of your legal rights. CBD Oil is an excellent product to make at home for yourself or give as a gift.
THE OIL METHOD
Before getting started with this method, it’s important to know that the quality of the material you use (especially the quality of the cannabis) will directly affect the quality of your final product. This is why it’s best to pick a high-quality strain that’s sourced from a reputed retailer.
This method involves extracting CBD oil in a way that is considered to be one of the safest ways possible. All you need for this method is a carrier oil, such as coconut oil, or olive oil. This method is gaining popularity due to its simplicity and safety. This method is also cleaner than some others and your end result will be free of additional unwanted residues.
First you will need to decarboxylate your buds. To get started, choose buds, leaves, and stems of a high-quality cannabis plant. Then, bake the buds and leaves at approximately 220°F for 90 minutes. This process heats the plant material at a certain temperature for a specific period of time in order to activate the plant’s chemical compounds.
Next, use a mason jar to mix the ground-up cannabis with the carrier oil of your choice. Be sure to fully saturate the decarboxylated cannabis with the oil. You can adjust the quantity of oil depending on how potent you want the end result to be. Finally, secure the lid of the jar.
Secure the mason jar over another pot similar to the way you a double boiler is set up. Ensure the jar is secure and heat the water in the pot using a thermometer until it reaches a temperature of at least 200 degrees.
Make sure you check regularly to ensure the water is not evaporating too quickly, if it’s necessary to add more, make sure you do so carefully to avoid splashing.
Turn off the stove after letting the oil mixture simmer for three hours. Then remove it from heat and allow it to cool for another three hours.
Once this is done, it is recommended to heat the oil mixture again for another three hours, then leave it to cool again overnight.
Your CBD oil will be ready to use the next morning, but first make sure you strain the mixture through cheesecloth and store it in a cool, dark and dry place.
THE ALCOHOL METHOD
The alcohol method, also known as the ethanol method, does not require special skills or advanced equipment similarly to the oil method. This makes it a great choice for beginners.
One of the pros of this CBD oil-extraction process is that it uses simple alcohol as the extracting agent. This process does not leave an unpleasant taste or odour as opposed to some other agents.
Start by placing the cannabis in a ceramic or a glass bowl. Then, cover it with alcohol and stir for approximately six minutes. Once this is done, use a wooden spoon to extract the resin produced as a result of the process.
Place a straining bag or sieve in the bowl in order to filter out the alcohol. Squeeze out as much of the extract as possible. If you think that more oil extraction is possible you can repeat this process until you aren’t able to get more.
In a double boiler, pour the extracted oil and heat it until bubbles start to form. The aim is to make the alcohol evaporate without raising the temperature too high. Wait until the oil simmers for about thirty minutes on a very low setting. Once the alcohol evaporates completely, stir the mixture and turn off the heat.
Once cooled, transfer the concentrated extract to a storage bottle with a tight lid in a cool, dark and dry place. It’s recommended to allow this to sit for at least two to three hours before use.
