What develops discernment in a reader? I can talk about four things.
1) READ. Read widely, newspapers, magazines, books, both fiction and non-fiction. Discover how stories are told, how they are found to be true, how they are corrupted for a purpose.
2) REMEMBER WHAT YOU READ. Connect names and events in the news with historical events and their actors. Feel the connections between people and changes.
3) BROADEN YOUR EXPERIENCE. Whether through reading or personal activities, get a rich sense of how things work: societies, civics, people, business, everything.
4) DO YOUR HOMEWORK. Learn how to ask questions and research answers, to recognize and get past con artistry.
I am on this, because yesterday and today Judy Byington’s Restored Republic post carried a link that she headlined, Sealed Indictments Being Unsealed:182,771 sealed, 21,381 unsealed, 409,152 non-sealed: https://www.ourgreatawakening.org/182771-sealed-indictments-being-unsealed/ Around 87 lower echelon Democrats and Republicans were named here as having their indictments unsealed – most for pedophilia.
Curious, I clicked and opened the ourgreatawakening site. The list of “around 87” names and their offenses are the only content in the post. The headline, of course, reads, 182,771 sealed indictments being “Unsealed.”
The headline sets up the expectation of juicy revelations. The map goes unexplained. The text above the list is breathless rah-rah anticipating you-know-what.
And that’s it. The list of names and offenses is all there is. No dates, just names and a phrase.
I noticed something about the text. It contained the words, “resigned, convicted, sentenced.” Meaning, all of these things had happened in the past.
I also noticed some familiar names, among them Strom Thurmond. Who has been dead a long while.
So, items 1) through 3) had been activated in me. Memory of what I had read, seen, and learned in my life. Time for 4), to DO THE HOMEWORK. Simple Googling for the offenders’ names told me a lot, very quickly:
The headline is a lie. Someone has made a fool of Judy Byington.
This is an old, OLD list. Many of the offenders have served their time and vanished from public life. Many are still in prison. Several are already dead, like Strom Thurmond, who died in 2003. Who’s going to pursue an indictment against a man who’s been dead for 17 years? The offenses range in dates from 1980 to 2019. Who would try to pass off a list of done-and-dusted court cases as “unsealed indictments” about to be made public?
Maybe, Dear Reader, someone needs to distract you. Maybe someone knows how many people have adopted “arrests” and “indictments” as a pet obsession and are ravenous for any information – anything! – to feed it.
Here is what I found about the list of offenders, while Doing the Homework.
The original list, whoever compiled it, has been shared around the Internet for at least 15 years. Most of the names show up on this 2005 page, with a bit more detail, like dates.

This is a Daily Kos diary from 2006 that leads off with a politico who, oddly, did not make the list, but was quite famous in his day: House Rep. Mark Foley, who was accused of propositioning underage male pages while, uh, Chair of the House caucus on child sex offenders.

The same list of names, the exact same verbiage describing their crimes, has been circulating around the Internet for at least FIFTEEN YEARS.
It was easy to Do the Homework. Rather than create an unwieldy document, here’s your technique: select and copy the offender’s name and a few words just beyond his name, like “resigned,” or “was convicted.” Paste the phrase into the search bar of your browser, and hit Return. Off you go.
My ultimate point? The article so breathlessly shared by Judy Byington’s Restored Republic report, yesterday and today, from OurGreatAwakening dot org, sports a headline that is FAKE. Clickbait. Gaslighting.
That dot-org blog post thanks someone named Peter Olesky for “compiling this list,” but I maintain that he did no such thing. Rather, he copied and pasted names from a list that is FIFTEEN YEARS OLD, and distributed it as examples of “unsealed indictments” being released ahead of the RV.
Maybe whoever sent Olesky the list said these were from the “unsealed indictments.” If that is so, that source was lying to Olesky. And Olesky DID NOT DO HIS HOMEWORK.
And Judy Byington did not do hers. That’s disappointing, for someone who has been alert to these crimes for so many years.
At any rate, I hope that as you Do Your Homework with this list, it is clear that these arrests have been going on for decades – by this list, through five Presidents’ administrations. They didn’t begin with Trump. Don’t give him the credit for arrests, convictions and sentences made in the GWBush Administration. These are not Trump’s “sealed indictments.”
