COCOA, Fla. — The world's biggest spaceship may be taking shape in a dusty sheet metal yard in Cocoa.
SpaceX's Starship is one day destined for Mars.
The work on Starship is going on in an out-of-the-way industrial area of Cidco Road.
A man at the site, who was wearing a SpaceX shirt and cap, would not say if the site was a SpaceX facility.
There were SpaceX trucks going in and out, three Tesla cars in the parking lot and a big metal cylinder under construction.
The owner of the facility, Coastal Steel, confirmed to WESH 2 it's being leased to SpaceX.
The company's founder, Elon Musk, said recently in a Twitter post, "SpaceX is doing simultaneous competing builds of Starship in Boca Chica Texas & Cape Canaveral Florida."
The plant is across the Indian River from Cape Canaveral.
There are strong similarities between the Starship in Texas and what's being built in Cocoa.
Musk has also tweeted, "Both sites will make many Starships. This is a competition to see which location is most effective. Answer might be both."
The Starship, designed to be the largest spaceship ever built, is making a humble beginning in an anonymous industrial area, surrounded by junkyards and metal shops.
The main structure is outdoors; additional sections appear to be under construction in a big building.
A few spectators have come out to catch a glimpse. Musk has said the Starship will be large enough to carry 100 colonists to Mars and would launch from the Kennedy Space Center often.
SpaceX did not respond to our inquiry.
Musk has said early test flights of the Starship are a year or two away.
